At least 15 people were killed and over 4,700 of them sustained injuries from an explosion during celebration of fire festival in Iran on Wednesday.
The mishap took place in Iran’s Tehran where thousands of Iranians gathered to celebrate the occasion last evening before Nowruz, the Iranian New Year.
An official from the Iranian National Medical Emergency Organisation said that 72 percent of the injured ones were aged under 22 years. Among those injured between February 20 and March 12, 565 have been hospitalised, with 38 in ICUs and four in critical condition, the official added.
The official further said that among the victims, 257 people underwent amputations, 1,594 suffered eye injuries and 1,282 sustained burns. With a 21 percent increase in the death toll compared to the same period last year, the festival has severely impacted thousands of lives this year.
