After Singapore, Hong Kong has placed a ban on the sale of popular Indian spice brands - Everest and MDH, after finding a chemical responsible for causing cancer, primarily breast cancer.
The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) in lab tests recently detected ethylene oxide, a pesticide classified as a carcinogen, in three MDH products – Madras Curry Powder, Mixed Masala Powder, and Sambhar Masala – and Everest’s Fish Curry Masala. The pesticide has been found in the spices beyond permissible limits, making it unfit for human consumption.
"According to the Pesticide Residues in Food Regulation (Cap. 132CM), a food for human consumption containing pesticide residue may only be sold if consumption of the food is not dangerous or prejudicial to health," CFS report said.
The CFS also asked vendors to remove the spices from their shelves and began a thorough probe. It also said “appropriate action” shall be taken if the instruction is violated.
Meanwhile, Singapore’s Food Agency said that while there is no immediate health threat from low levels of ethylene oxide, its prolonged consumption could pose serious health risks due to the chemical’s carcinogenic properties.
