West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will on Monday visit the accident site in North Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri to take stock of the rescue operations. it is reportedly informed that Banerjee will leave for the site at 4:30 pm on a special aircraft.
A cargo train hit a Kanchenjunga Express train hard from behind on Monday morning, leaving 15 dead and 60 injured so far near Rangapani station, about 30 km from North Bengal"s New Jalpaiguri station. The collision also damaged and derailed three rear compartments of the Express train.
Meanwhile, Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose is also scheduled to visit the accident site later today to oversee the relief operations and interact with the injured to address their concerns.
Meanwhile, Eastern Railway CPRO Kaushik Mitra confirmed that the affected Kanchanjunga Express has left for Kolkata’s Sealdah railway station with passengers in the unaffected coaches and will reach its destination tonight.
“The train has started from the accident site around 12.40 pm and is expected to reach Sealdah at 8 pm,” said Mitra.
The mishap has resulted in the disruption and diversion in rail services. Among the trains diverted include the Guwahati-Saraighat Express, Guwahati-Bengaluru Express, NJP-Howrah Vande Bharat, Kamrup Express and Uttarbanga Express, officials said.
In addition, the North Bengal State Transport (NBST) would also deploy ten buses to bring back stranded passengers from the site.
