The Calcutta High Court has said on Monday that Bengal Police can arrest Trinamool Congress leader Sheikh Shahjahan – the prime accused of sexual atrocities against women and land grab allegations - in West Bengal’s Sandeshkhali.
“We clarify there is no stay on arrest in any proceeding. There is only a first information report and he (Shahjahan) has been named as an accused. Obviously he needs to be arrested,” the court said.
The village at North 24 Parganas has been burning since February 8 when thousands of women with sharp weapons demanded the arrest of Sheikh Shahjahan and his two aides - Shibprasad Hazara and Uttam Sardar - for their corrupt practices. While his aides have been arrested, Shahjahan is absconding since January 5.
A large number of women have been relentlessly fighting against the injustice on them and said that Sheikh Shahjahan targeted young girls and raped them often. Their actions have brought TMC under fire from the opposition BJP, which has accused it of protecting Shahjahan.
The High Court’s clarification to arrest Shahjahan came after TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee claimed on Sunday that the Bengal government is unable to arrest him because the court had “tied the hands the police.”
