Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar departed for Iran on Wednesday morning to attend the funeral of the country’s late President Ebrahim Raisi, his foreign minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and other officials who died in a helicopter crash, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) informed.
“VP Jagdeep Dhankhar embarks on a visit to Tehran to attend the official ceremony to pay condolences on the tragic demise of President Seyyed Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister H. Amir-Abdollahian, of Iran,” said MEA spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, in a post on X.
President of India, Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed their condolences to the government, people of Iran and the families of the deceased. In addition, the External Affairs Minister visited the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi on May 21 to convey India’s condolences on the untimely demise, the MEA said in a press release.
Meanwhile, the Iranian government has declared a public holiday on Wednesday as the funeral is expected to take place, and the country’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah will be leading prayers.
Additionally, the Union Home Minister, on Monday, announced that India would observe a one-day state mourning for Raisi’s sudden death, following which the national flag was flown at half-mast and the Parliament House and Rashtrapati Bhawan.
