At least 14 people died and 60 others survived injuries after an advertisement billboard collapsed in Mumbai during a fierce dust storm on Monday, officials said.
The billboard that fell onto a fuel station and several houses in the city’s Ghatkopar area owing severe rainfall and strong winds yesterday evening, left dozens of people stranded.
Soon after the mishap, fire fighters, disaster management forces and police officials rushed to the spot to rescue the trapped survivors, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the civic body that runs Mumbai, said on X.
A disaster management personnel informed that a total of 88 people were rescued, of whom 14 were pronounced dead by doctors and 31 were released from hospital after medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site to take stock of the situation and said that the government will provide medical treatment to those injured. He further announced a financial compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased.
“Rs 5 lakh will be given to the family of those who have lost their lives. I have directed the authorities concerned to check all such hoardings in Mumbai,” Shinde said, adding all illegal and dangerous billboards across the city be removed.
The inclement weather condition caused temporary disruptions in rail services and suspended flight operations as well.
