Manu Bhaker has scripted history as she became the first Indian to win a bronze medal in the women’s 10m air pistol event at the Olympics on Sunday.
With this win ends a 12-year wait for an overall Olympic medal in the shooting category. The last time India won bronze medals was back in 2012 in London by rapid-fire pistol shooter Vijay Kumar and 10m air rifle marksman Gagan Narang. Rajyawardhan Singh Rathore, Abhinav Bindra also brought home medals earlier in shooting.
Manu scored 221.7 in 20 shots as South Korean duo of Jin Ye Oh and Kim Yeji won gold and silver, respectively. Jin Ye Oh will take home gold medal as she finished the rounds with a total of 243.2, making an even better performance from the previous record of 240.3 by Vitalina Batsarkshkina.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Manu for her significant achievement on Sunday. “A historic medal! Well done, @realmanubhaker, for winning India’s FIRST medal at #ParisOlympics2024! Congrats for the Bronze. This success is even more special as she becomes the 1st woman to win a medal in shooting for India. An incredible achievement!,” Modi posted on X.
Hailing from Haryana’s Jhajjar area, Manu displayed a natural affinity for tennis, skating, boxing, and the martial art of thang ta from a young age and garnered nationwide recognition in such athletics.
