UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak accepted his defeat to Labour Party leader Keir Starmer in the UK general elections who is set to become the country’s next prime minister. The Labour Party exceeding the majority mark in the House of Commons indicates a dramatic shift in the history of British politics.
Rishi Sunak congratulated Starmer and took responsibility for the loss. “The British people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight... and I take responsibility for the loss. The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” Sunak said.
“To the many good, hard-working Conservative candidates who lost tonight, despite their tireless efforts, their local records and delivery, and their dedication to their communities. I am sorry,” Sunak added.
With his sweeping victory, Starmer becomes the next oldest prime minister in nearly 50 years at the age of 61.
“We have to return politics to public service... a burden has finally been removed from the shoulders of this great nation,” Starmer said.
Rishi Sunak assumed the post of prime minister in 2022 after Liz Truss stepped down from the position after just 45 days in office. With its reign for 14 years, the Conservative Party faced challenges including the management of handling economy following a tumultuous exit from the European Union.
