The Nordic countries have acquired the top positions in the annual UN-sponsored World Happiness Report published on Wednesday. While Finland ranked first for the seventh year, Denmark, Iceland, Sweden and Israel secured top five spots.
While, Netherlands and Norway managed to make it to top 10 with ranks 6 and 7 respectively, Luxembourg ranked 8, Switzerland stood at 9th position and Australia ranked 10.
Meanwhile, Afghanistan, attacked by the Taliban reign, is the unhappiest country and stayed at the bottom of 143 countries surveyed after Congo, Sierra Leone, Lesotho and Lebanon.
Additionally, the United States dropped to 23rd spot from 16th last year. Whereas, this year, Canada stood at the 15th position, the UK acquired the 20th spot, Germany at 24 and France at 27.
Concerning the Middle Eastern countries, the UAE and Saudi Arabia ranked at 22nd and 28th positions respectively. Among the Asian nations, India ranked 126, Singapore was at 30, Japan at 50 and south Korea grabbed the 51st spot.
Efficient governmental organisations, robust welfare system, low corruption levels and accessibility to free health care and educational facilities determine Finland’s overall happiness. The report also suggested that younger generations are happier than elderly populations across most regions worldwide.
The happiness ranking list is based on overall life satisfaction of individuals, GDP per capita, social support, good health, freedom, generosity and corruption.
