Mumbai residents finally woke up to overcast skies on Tuesday morning following from severe rainfall that crippled the city’s normal lives and disrupted air, rail and road transport services on Monday.
Mumbai dwellers heaved a sigh of huge respite as the city’s local train services began to function normally as there was no waterlogging on the tracks and traffic flow was smooth since early morning. Although rains took a break, schools and colleges across the city continue to remain closed as a precautionary measure after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ for the city on Tuesday, forecasting heavy downpours in multiple parts of the city.
In the 24-hour period ending at 8 am, Mumbai recorded an average rain of 115.63 mm, Eastern Mumbai 168.68 mm and Western Mumbai 165.93 mm rainfall. At least 40 tree or branches were uprooted, but there was no report of any casualties. Some vehicles also suffered damage, a civic official said.
Additionally, the island city"s eastern and western areas recorded an average rainfall of 116.07 mm, 84.77 mm and 109.55 mm, respectively.
On Monday, some parts of the the country"s finance capital city witnessed 300 mm rainfall between 1 am to 6 am, resulting in knee-deep waterlogging in streets and disrupting rail and flight operations.
