The southwest monsoon is expected to enter Kerala coast around May 31, India Meteorological Department informed on Wednesday. The news came as a relief for farmers after poor rainfall last year disrupted crop cultivation.
“This year, the Southwest Monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 31 with a model error of four days. This is not early; it’s close to the normal date,” India Meteorological Department said on Wednesday.
Nearly half of India’s farmland depends on June to September rains – backbone of the country to generate agricultural economy – as a wide range of crops such as rice, corn, cotton, soybeans and sugarcane are grown in this period. Monsoon is also considered essential in India for replenishing reservoirs for drinking purposes and power generation across the country.
Monsoon arrived the southern state on June 8 last year, May 29 in 2022, June 3 in 2021 and June 1 in 2020.
