Several Indian states, including the Tamil Nadu government has recently banned sale of sugary treat cotton candy due to its presence of an artificial colouring ingredient that is said to cause cancer.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said that cotton candy samples were sent for lab testing by the food safety department, which discovered the presence of a ‘cancer-causing chemical Rhodamine-B in it. Union Territory Pondicherry also banned its sale for the same reason on February 9.

“As per the Food Safety Standards Act, 2006, preparation, packaging, importing, selling and serving food items containing Rhodamine-B in wedding ceremonies and other public events is a punishable offence,” the minister stated. The chemical was confirmed as “substandard” and “unsafe”.

P Satheesh Kumar, designated officer, Food Safety Department in Chennai said that Rhodamine-B is used in leather colouring and paper printing. Using it as a food colouring agent is punishable and can cause potential health hazards.
