As many as 50 devotees bound for Madmaheshwar Temple in Uttarakhand were stranded after the pilgrimage was stopped on Thursday due to heavy rain and landslides on the trekking route.
As per officials, a temporary wooden bridge constructed over the Markanda River was washed away owing to torrential rains, disrupting smooth journey to the temple.
The holy shrine, which is part of the Panch Kedar group of temples in Uttarakhand, is located at an altitude of 11,473 feet.
Meanwhile, severe rainfall overnight overflooded the Balganga river in the Boodha Kedar area of Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district on Friday, submerging multiple houses, damaging crops and many roads.
However, no casualties were reported as people residing in houses nearby the riverbanks shifted to safer locations. Meanwhile, a rescue team rushed to the area.
In view of the inclement weather condition, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued an ‘orange alert’ for Dehradun and Bageshwar and forecasted heavy rainfall in the area.
Following the advisory, the local administration decided to shut down schools and Anganwadi centres in the city for Friday.
