The three-time BJP-NDA candidate Om Birla has been elected as the Lok Sabha Speaker for the second time on Wednesday after defeating INDIA bloc’s candidate K Suresh via voice vote in the contest.
Om Birla expressed his delight in attaining the Speaker’s chair once again and Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi congratulated him on his win.
Congratulating Birla, PM Modi said that he is looking forward to his guidance for the next five years. “I congratulate you on behalf of the entire House and look forward to your guidance for the next five years. Your sweet smile keeps the entire House happy,” Modi said.
Meanwhile, Rahul Gandhi expressed his hope to the Speaker saying that the opposition shall be given a chance to raise their voice. The opposition would like to assist you in your work. I am confident you will allow us to speak in House.”
Om Birla currently serves as an MP from the Kota-Bundi constituency in Rajasthan after winning seat by a margin of more than 41,000 votes in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, Suresh had earlier worked as a Union Minister in the second UPA government. He won his eighth Lok Sabha election from Mavelikkara in the recent general elections.
