Delhi Health Minister Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Thursday that at least 380 people have been admitted to government hospitals and 14 of them lost their lives in last 48 hours as extreme heatwave spell continues across the city. The minister added that 112 had been released from hospitals and 118 were still admitted.
Searing temperatures of 52 degrees Celsius, highest in the past 60 years are causing heat-related illnesses, thereby adding pressure on the health infrastructure across north India and particularly in Delhi, Bharadwaj said.
An official from the Delhi government said that there was a sudden spurt in hospitalisations and death cases and that they “will confirm the cause of their death after a post-mortem.”
While the central government-run Safdarjung Hospital said two deaths were reported due to heat stroke, 11 patients affected by heatstroke were admitted at RML hospital and nine deaths were suspected to be caused by heat stroke.
Meanwhile, 66 cases of heatstroke were encountered by Lok Nayak Hospital in the national capital from June 1-18. Another official said that there have been four deaths at GTB Hospital in the last 48 hours.
In an effort to tackle the crisis, Bharadwaj spoke to medical superintendents and medical directors of Delhi government hospitals and instructed them to increase the number of beds for heat stroke cases.
Following a series of illnesses and deaths, the Delhi government said that it would form a three-member panel to ascertain the exact cause of such incidences at all Delhi hospitals.
