The Union Government has appointed Lt General Upendra Dwivedi as the next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on Tuesday night.
The Defence Ministry stated that Lt Gen Dwivedi will take charge of his new post on June 30 from incumbent Army Chief Manoj Pande after he demits office. Last month, the Centre has extended the tenure of Lt Pande by one month six days, before his retirement on May 31.
“The government has appointed Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, presently serving as Vice Chief of the Army Staff, as the next Chief of the Army Staff with effect from the afternoon of June 30,” the defence ministry said.
In his 39 years of military service, Lt General Dwivedi commanded his unit in the Kashmir Valley and Rajasthan. He also served as the Sector Commander and Inspector General (IG) of Assam Rifles in the North Eastern region of India.
Born on July 1, 1964, Lt Gen Dwivedi also worked as the deputy chief at the Army headquarters and also led the 9th Corps in Himachal Pradesh.
