Mumbai has overtaken Beijing to emerge as Asia’s billionaire capital for the very first time, according to the 2024 Hurun Global Rich List as it revealed a shift in the wealth landscape.
This significant rise can be attributed to the addition of 26 new billionaires taking the city’s total figure to 92 as against 91 in China, thereby becoming the third-ranked country worldwide with 271 billionaires.
“Mumbai was the fastest-growing billionaire capital in the world, adding 26 in the year and taking it to third in the world and Asia’s billionaire capital. New Delhi broke into the Top 10 for the first time,” the report said.
Indian billionaires’ cumulative wealth reached US$1 trillion, surpassing China"s average wealth per billionaire (US$3.2 billion vs US$3.8 billion), the report added.
With this, Mumbai now stands right after New York with 119 billionaires, followed by London which has 97 billionaires. Beijing has lost its position to Mumbai after the city removed 19 ex-billionaires from its list in a year.
