The Supreme Court on Tuesday has not put a hold on the implementation of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and sought the Centre to respond to a bunch of petitioners seeking a stay on the rules of the Act in the next date of hearing April 9.
Meanwhile, the Centre also said that the act is all about granting citizenship to the non-Muslim persecuted migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan and not does not intend to snatch one’s citizenship.
“It (CAA) does not take away citizenship of any person,” Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the Centre, told a bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.
The Solicitor General said that he needed some time to respond to the pleas filed by more than 200 petitioners, to which Chief Justice Chandrachud granted three weeks’ time to the Centre and decided to bring up the matter on April 9.
Challenging the controversial law, the petitioners said that the Act discriminates against Muslims on the basis of religion and does not grant them the benefits of the Act, further arguing that such segregation violates the right to equality under Article 14.
The Home Ministry notified rules for the implementation of CAA on March 11, 2024. CAA is aimed to fast-track citizenship of the non-Muslims migrants who were persecuted in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The Act, enacted on December 11, 2019 was subjected to heated and widespread debates and massive protests throughout India back then.
