Dr Nitya Anand, who created India’s first oral contraceptive pill – Saheli – passed away on Saturday at the age of 99. His funeral rites will be performed on Monday.
He was suffering from a prolonged illness and breathed his last at SGPGIMS Lucknow.
Centchroman’s discovery – popularly known as ‘Saheli’ - was the brainchild of Nitya Anand, which was world’s first and only non-steroidal, non-hormonal, once-a-week oral contraceptive pill. It was later launched by the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.
In 2016, Saheli was incorporated in the National Family Programme of India. Even today, the pill serves as the world’s only non-steroidal, non-hormonal contraceptive.
Honoured with Padma Shri by the Government of India, Anand was the former director of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) from 1974 to 1984. He contributed significantly in the field of medical sciences with his publication of over 400 research papers and supervision of 100 PhD students.
Anand is survived by his daughter Dr Sonia Nityanand, who serves as vice-chancellor of King George"s Medical University (KGMU), and sons Neeraj Nityanand and Dr Naveen Nitya Anand.
