Prime Minister Narendra Modi performed a 30-minute yoga session to mark the celebration of 10th International Yoga Day in Jammu and Kashmir’s Srinagar on Friday.
The programme was initially scheduled to be held at Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) on the banks of Dal Lake. However, the venue was shifted indoors following disruption due to incessant rains.
This year’s theme for yoga celebrations, ‘Yoga for Self and Society’, focuses on yoga’s significant role in promoting one’s mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
Extending his best wishes to the countrymen on the occasion of celebrating Yoga today, PM Modi said, “I extend greetings to people of the country and people performing yoga in every corner of the world on Yoga Day. The number of people practising yoga is growing worldwide.”
“In the last 10 years, the expansion of yoga has changed its perception. Today, the world is seeing a new yoga economy going forward. In India, from Rishikesh and Kashi to Kerala, a new connection of yoga tourism is being seen. Tourists from across the world are coming to India because they want to learn authentic yoga in India,” he added and also urged “everyone to make yoga part of their daily lives.”
Over the years, the prime minister has popularised yoga to help people make it an integral part of their daily lives and led its celebrations at various iconic places including Delhi"s Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi and Jabalpur and at the UN Headquarters in New York last year.
