The fatality toll jumped to 54 and hundreds of them are still feared trapped after three landslides devastated the hilly areas near Meppadi in Kerala’s Wayanad district owing to severe rainfall on Tuesday morning.
A huge team of NDRF forces and along with Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) have rushed to the spot for rescue mission immediately after the mishap. However, complete damage of a bridge has obstructed rescue activities.
Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages were the worst affected due to the disaster. Many are considered to have washed away in the
Chaliyar river.
Meanwhile, the Indian Army said in a statement that they have deployed 225 personnel, including medical teams and two Air Force helicopters, a Mi-17 and an ALH (Advanced Light Helicopter), have also been pressed into service.
Kerala minister Veena George said that at least 70 people sustained injuries and proper medical treatment for the injured have been arranged.
Meanwhile, expressing his condolences Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a financial compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the families of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for those injured.
The landslides left a trail of destruction, with several buildings and vehicles damaged, trees uprooted and deaths of many people.
