A day after three civil service aspirants died due to flooding at the basement of a study center in Delhi, the city’s Mayor Shelly Oberoi on Sunday said that the students were being taught illegally and directed stringent action be taken against those carrying out commercial activities in the basements.

Oberoi asked the MCD commissioner to take strict action against all such coaching centres across Delhi which falls under the jurisdiction of MCD and running commercial activities in the basements, that are not in accordance with the existing construction norms.

“Yesterday some students were trapped in a private coaching institute being run in Rajinder Nagar due to flooding and out of them three students lost their lives. This is very shocking. This incident needs thorough investigation and swift and strongest possible action,” Oberoi said.

“It is also our responsibility to ensure that such an incident does not recur in any part of Delhi,” she added.

The water that accumulated at Rau’s IAS Study Centre in Delhi’s Old Rajinder Nagar, eventually severely flooded the basement of the building, resulting in fatalities of three civil service aspirants.   

Many party leaders including Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Aam Aadmi Party MP Swati Maliwal, among others expressed their outrage over the unfortunate incident and claimed those accountable for the incident must be given strictest punishment.

Meanwhile, police have arrested the study centre’s owner Abhishek Gupta and coordinator Deshpal Singh on Sunday. They have been booked under charges of culpable homicide and negligence.

The deceased have been identified as Tania Soni (25), Shreya Yadav (25), and Nevin Dalwin (28) – two female students and one male.
