Torrential rainfall has waterlogged many areas of Pune, disrupting normal lives and paralysing road traffic. Three people have also been electrocuted while walking through a waterlogged street at Pulachi Wadi in the early hours of Thursday.

Residential complexes in the city’s Pimpri-Chinchwad have been flooded, following which over 200 firefighters have been pressed into service who rescued or evacuated around 160 people stranded in buildings at Ekta Nagari in Sinhagad Road and Warje area of Pune owing to waterlogging. The Baba Bhide bridge on Mutha river has also been submerged under water following heavy downpours.

In addition, one person died and another one sustained injuries after a landslide occurred in Maval tehsil. The deceased person worked at a restaurant. Meanwhile, schools have been kept closed today in the city’s various areas, including Pimpri Chinchwad, Bhor, Velhe, Maval Mulshi, and Khadakwasla.

On the other hand, Mumbai and its neighbouring areas including Thane have also been sweltering under tremendously heavy rainfall. Mumbai’s Andheri, Sion, Chembur and Kurla are waterlogged and the Andheri subway have been shut due to waterlogging. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation said that heavy rainfall also caused rise in water level of Vihar Lake and Modak Sagar Lake, leading to overflowing on Thursday early morning. These are the two of the seven lakes that supply water to the city.

Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar took stock of the situation and urged the residents to stay indoors and step out if absolutely necessary. Pune collector Suhas Diwase has also instructed to keep all tourist spots shut for the next 48 hours.
