A recent study has found out that life expectancy of Indian population shrunk during the covid-19 pandemic in 2019-2020.
The study titled Large and unequal life expectancy declines during the COVID-19 pandemic in India in 2020 claimed that the life span in the country has reduced by 2.6 years between 2019 and 2020. It added that the decline is more prominent for women (3.1 years) compared to males (2.1 years).
The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare in response to the study released a statement saying that the findings published in the academic journal Science Advance by dubbing them as ‘untenable’ and ‘unacceptable’.
“Excess mortality reported in the ‘Science Advances’ paper in 2020 over the previous year is a gross and misleading overestimate,” the ministry said.
The researchers of the study further revealed that upper-caste Hindus experienced a decline in their lifespan by 1.3 years, whereas Muslims and Scheduled Tribes witnessed a 5.4-year and 4.1-year drop in their life expectancies.
Overall, the study showed that mortality rate nationwide was 17 per cent higher in 2020 compared to 2019, indicating 1.19 million excess deaths in India. The paper also suggested a decline in the life expectancy was higher among young population and people aged between 50-60.
