At least 46 people have died due to floods in Assam, causing 8 others to drown in flood waters on Wednesday.
Morigaon, Dibrugarh, Darrang, Golaghat, Biswanath and Tinsukia districts were badly affected by the natural calamity. Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Golaghat, Nalbari, Barpeta, Darrang and Cachar were the worst sufferers.
Flood waters have contributed to the rise in Brahmaputra river water and affected lives of at least 11 lakh people across the state, inundating roads, villages and also causing huge damage to crops in farmlands. Around 52 bridges and 922 roads were severely damaged by heavy floods, disrupting transport connectivity with major towns.
Over 500 relief canos have been set up where 25,744 people are already taking shelter, including 106 pregnant women and nearly 4.700 children. So far, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have evacuated 1,993 animals and 8,377 people.
Additionally, 11 animals have drowned and 65 others were rescued from floodwaters at Kaziranga National Park. Following the incident, forest department officials have also amped up security at the forest to protect the biodiversity there.
