West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee extended her warm wishes on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr today as she addressed a large gathering at an Eid prayer and said that she will not allow the implementation of Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, National Register of Citizens and Uniform Civil Code across the state. She even warned the crowd not to get trapped by some people who are trying to “engineer riots” during upcoming elections.

“Eid Mubarak. It is the Eid of happiness. It is the Eid of giving strength. It is a big thing to observe this Eid by fasting for a month... We are ready to shed blood for the country but will not tolerate torture for the country. A uniform civil code is not acceptable. I want harmony in all religions. Your safety, your life...,” said Banerjee while addressing the gathering at an Eid prayer in Kolkata’s Red Road area.

“We will not accept the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, National Register of Citizens and Uniform Civil Code. If we will live unitedly, nobody will be able to cause harm to us,” she added.

The TMC supremo also asserted that her party’s target to oust the BJP from the state completely. “We will decide about the INDIA bloc later. But in Bengal, please see that no vote goes to any other party,” Banerjee said.

Mamata Banerjee’s statements come a day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s scathing attack on Trinamool Congress (TMC) for their wrongdoings, misleading people and constant atrocities towards women on Wednesday in the state’s Balurghat ahead of 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Slamming the TMC government Shah said, “Mamata didi is misleading people about the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). Why is she against refugees obtaining citizenship? I request refugees not to be afraid, please apply for citizenship, there will be absolutely no problem. No police case will be filed against you. Granting citizenship to refugees is our commitment.”

CAA is aimed to fast-track citizenship of the non-Muslims migrants who were persecuted in Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. The Act, enacted on December 11, 2019 was subjected to heated and widespread debates and massive protests throughout India back then.
