With the recovery of two more bodies under the debris, the death toll from the collapse of a billboard in Mumbai rose to 16 on Wednesday. The casualty earlier stood at 14.
The rescue and search operation are still underway. The incident happened in the city’s Ghatkopar area following heavy rainfall accompanied by severe dust storm lashed the city on Monday, causing waterlogging of multiple streets and traffic snarl.
Rescue team officials informed that they had earlier extricated 89 people under the debris, of whom 14 were declared dead and 75 sustained injuries.
Following the Ghatkopar mishap, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde ordered a structural audit of all hoardings in Mumbai. He also announced a financial compensation of Rs 5 lakh to the families of the deceased and medical attention for the injured from the government.
