Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday reviewed the progress of India’s first space flight mission Gaganyaan and introduced its astronauts to the world. Gaganyaan marks India’s first manned mission and various ISRO centres nationwide are in full swing to achieve another milestone in its space endevours.

The four astronauts are Group Captain Prashanth Balakrishnan, Group Captain Ajith Krishnan, Group Captain Angad Pratap, Wing Commader Shubhanshu Shukla.

Notably, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is slated to launch the mega mission between 2024 and 2025, with its preliminary studies dating back in 2006.

Speaking at the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) in Thiruvananthapuram, PM Modi said, “They are not just four names or four human beings, they are the four powers that are going to take the aspirations of 140 crore Indians to space. An Indian is going to space, after 40 years. This time, the time is ours, the countdown is ours and the rocket is also ours.”

“In the development journey of every country, there are some moments which not only define the present, but also the future of its coming generations. Today is one such moment for India.”

Modi’s announcement was made in the presence of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Union Minister Muraleedharan, and ISRO Chairman S Somanath.

Gaganyaan, meaning ‘celestial vehicle’ is a three-day mission, which will carry four Indian Air Force pilots to an orbit of 400 kms and bring them back safely to Earth by landing on Indian sea waters.
