Here’s what you should do to beat excessive heat this summer

People are facing the twin assaults of scorching sun and intense heat waves that are seen to be constantly worsening with each passing day across India. And Bengal is no exception even.

With no signs of rainfall, Kolkata recorded a maximum temperature of 40 degree Celsius on Sunday and 39.6 degrees on Saturday. Intense heat is associated with the increased risk of sunstroke among elderly. Hence, taking care of your health by resorting to some simple tips is absolutely essential. Here’s how:

  1. Hydrate your body with at least 4 litres of water everyday even if you are not thirsty. The habit of drinking water right after you start your day is recommended by physicians and protects your body from dehydration.
  2. Avoid eating oily and spicy meals especially during summers as they take time to digest. It is advisable to consume easily digestible foods. Fast digestion will keep problems like gas and acidity at bay.
  3. Eating fresh fruits and vegetables is absolutely necessary. Office goers should include salads, watermelon, cucumber, sugarcane juice, coconut water and lemon juice in their diet to beat the heat.
  4. Water mixed with salt and sugar is also beneficial as the liquid works as an energy booster during summers.
  5. Always wear loose-fitted and comfortable clothes to circulate air all around your body. Additionally, carry umbrellas, sunglasses and drinking water before stepping out of the house.
  6. If you ever encounter a person losing consciousness due to excess heat, taking them to the nearby hospital is advisable.
