1,600 ft asteroid approaching closer to Earth, say NASA scientists

Scientists from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have predicted that a 1,600 large Asteroid named 388945 is dangerously coming closer to the Earth in the next 72 hours. The giant space rock is expected to make its closest approach to our planet at 2.48am on May 16.

NASA further said that the asteroid is 1,608 feet wide, which is in comparison to New York's iconic Empire State building stands at 1,454 feet. It is also larger than the Eiffel Tower and dwarf the Statue of Liberty.

The asteroid can cause huge damage if it hits Earth, but as per calculations by the scientists, it will pass by our planet from a distance of about 2.5 million miles away.

Humans and other living creatures surviving on the Earth will not be at risk because Earth will keep it 3.5 million miles away from us.

According to Live Science, the speed of the asteroid when nearest to the Earth will be 30 times faster than the speed of the sound and it will cross Earth's orbit within 3.2 million kilometres.

Once every two years, the asteroid moves closer to the Earth as it orbits the Sun, according to space scientists. It passed very close to Earth in May 2020 at a distance of 1.7 million miles. The next it will pass close to our planet is in May 2024 at a distance of 6.9 million miles.

NASA has recently launched Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission to defend Earth from such potentially dangerous asteroids.
