Senegal hospital fire kills 11 babies

Eleven newborn babies died after a hospital in Senegal in West Africa caught fire, the president of the country announced on Wednesday night.

President Macky Sall took to Twitter to share the news of deaths in the fire incident.

“I have just learned with pain and dismay about the deaths of 11 newborn babies in the fire at the neonatal department of the public hospital. To their mothers and their families, I express my deepest sympathy,” Sall said.

Meanwhile, the country’s Health minister Abdoulaye Diouf Sarr, who was attending a meeting in Geneva with the World Health Organization, said he would cut short his tour and return to Senegal immediately, adding that “an investigation is underway to see what happened.”

“This situation is very unfortunate and extremely painful. An investigation is under way to see what happened, said Diouf Sarr.”

According to Senegalese politician Diop Sy, the tragic incident occurred at Mame Abdou Aziz Sy Dabakh Hospital in Tivaouane and it is said that the fire was caught due to “short circuit”.
