‘Disease X’ grips fear among health experts in UK

While the world is still battling hard to combat coronavirus pandemic and monkey pox infection, health experts in Britain have now issued warning about the possibility of the emergence of a yet another pandemic known as Disease X. Besides, the team of experts have also urged the government to brace themselves up for its preparedness and boost health infrastructure of the country. The last case of polio was detected in humans in Britain 40 years ago. The warning has come in wake of the poliovirus that was detected in sewage samples in London. However, the health authorities in the UK have not found any cases of polio that could cause paralysis in children.

“We're living through a new pandemic area,” medical experts said, adding that the ‘Disease X’ could be just round the corner. According to the World Health Organisation, “Disease X represents the knowledge that a serious international epidemic could be caused by a pathogen currently unknown to cause human disease.”

United Kingdom has recently been the epicenter of a wave of contagious infections that have plagued the country in the last six months. Earlier, a case of H5 bird flu was found in a person in January this year and three cases of Lassa fever in the country were reported in February. Again in March, a woman was found to be infected with Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever after she returned to England from Central Asia. At present, 873 cases of monkey pox were reported across the nation, of which Scotland recorded 26 cases, Wales (8), and Northern Ireland (3).
