Tesla likely to collaborate with Reliance for EV manufacturing plant: Report

Porni Banerjee | ১০ এপ্রিল ২০২৪ ১৭ : ০৬

Electric Vehicle (EV) manufacturing firm Tesla is currently in the initial stages of talks with Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) for partnership to establish its automobile operations in India, the Hindu BusinessLine reported.

“Talks are at initial stages and have been ongoing for over a month,” a source said who is aware of the development, adding that the move shouldn’t be construed as RIL’s entry into the automobile space. RIL’s objective in the joint venture is to create a space for building capacities for electric vehicles in India.

Another person, with a good awareness on the matter, said that “the role of RIL has not been crystalised yet”, but expected to “play a significant hand in establishing the manufacturing facility and the allied ecosystem for Tesla in India.”

Meanwhile, RIL in 2023, collaborated with Ashok Leyland to launch India’s first hydrogen internal combustion engine-powered heavy-duty truck. The former company has also introduced removable and swappable batteries for EVs in the same year.

Concerning Tesla’s entry in India, the auto giant has earmarked $2 billion for its upcoming projects in the country, with plans to set up manufacturing plant either in Gujarat or Maharashtra. However, the latter state is likely to be preferred due to its port facilities. As of now, no final decision has been made.

However, Tesla may approach other domestic partners if ongoing discussions with Reliance do not turn out to be satisfactory.
